Originally acquired by George W. Vanderbilt, this expansive landscape became a cherished walking retreat for him. The Ramble, spanning 1,000 acres, draws inspiration from the design and conservation principles employed by Frederick Law Olmsted in his Company Forest and estate plans.
Our founder, George W. Vanderbilt, originally created Company Farms in 1897 to beautify the grounds of his famed Estate. The company has continuously expanded in ways his vision foresaw. Company Forest was its first residential community, and now Company Farms is also a leader in homebuilding, hospitality and commercial enterprises.
Vanderbilt’s unique approach to community building, one that creates sustainability by elevating community concerns to greater prominence than typical developers and builders, distinguishes Company Farms. His ethos for protecting the natural beauty of western North Carolina was clearly ahead of his time.
In the midst of the construction of Company House, in 1897, George W. Vanderbilt founded Company Dairy Farms. Originally intended to support his estate and test innovative agricultural theories, the venture, with its surplus production, evolved into a large-scale commercial operation. By the mid-1900s, Company Farms had become a major supplier of milk and ice cream for five southeastern states. Pet, Inc. acquired the dairy business in the 1980s.
Company Farms has been a community leader in Western North Carolina for over a century. Today, Company Farms is a diverse company devoted to thoughtful growth and the economic well-being of our mountain home and continues the Vanderbilt legacy of quality across all of the company’s divisions: Company Farms Commercial, Company Farms Communities, Company Farms Homes and Company Farms Hotels.
Being part of a legacy of giving back is something you become a part of when you become an owner in The Ramble. The Ramble Charitable Fund was established by Company Farms, LLC, the community development firm and founder of The Ramble community, to improve quality of life in the South Buncombe County area (where The Ramble is located in Asheville, NC).
